The City of Key West mourns the loss of District V Commissioner Mary Lou Hoover, who passed away at the age of 72 after a courageous health battle. First elected in 2018 and reelected in 2022, Commissioner Hoover was known for her thoughtful leadership, integrity, and deep compassion for the community she served.
City Manager Brian L. Barroso reflected on her impact, noting that her dedication and caring approach left a lasting mark on both the City team and the wider Key West community.
Beyond her role as Commissioner, Hoover devoted her life to public service and civic engagement. She championed local businesses, raised funds for numerous nonprofits, and founded Girls Night Out, a networking organization that supports charitable causes. She also served as Queen of Fantasy Fest, sat on the Board of Directors for the Key West Business Guild, and led Helpline of the Keys as President.
Her professional journey began with a 35-year career in public works construction before moving to Key West, where she continued as a consultant on major projects—including airport renovations and even the Pentagon’s structural steel contract.
Commissioner Hoover’s legacy is one of service, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the people of Key West. Her contributions will continue to inspire the community she loved so deeply.
