The Big Shark Catch in Key West, 1956
The Photo of the Day winner is this big shark photo from 1956. This picture was taken on May 22, 1956 on a Key West dock.
Accompanying note: "Photo of great white shark caught off the Western Dry Rocks, in 110 feet of water, at an old 'Mutton Snapper' fishing hole. The shark had to be removed from the water using a tow truck. The shark weighed 2,300 lbs!"
"Original photo taken by the late Art Stickel. Mr. Stickel was a fixture on the charterboat docks for many years, his photos are prized possessions by the Captains and crew members who possess them. They feature some of the all time great fish catches in Key West, Florida."
"Pictured with the shark are mate Earl Barnett, at left in glasses, and Capt. Tommy Lones, owner of the 'Gulf Stream II', pictured holding the pectoral fin." (Source: State Archives of Florida/Public Domain)
